Do you ever wake up in the morning and wonder why you do this? Why wake up and go to the same job where it doesn’t look like you’re doing anything or serving anybody or making anything better.
I guess we are because the company exists and people use their services and products and I’m just the new low-level grunt that still hasn’t learnt the system and how it makes an impact anyway. Like… What’s the point of all this? That’s where I’m at right now.
I’m not gonna go till… “You’re going to keep doing this and die one day!”
That’s just morbid.
Anyway, the point is it doesn’t look like I’ll be learning the whole point of it anytime soon. Or maybe it is secret that they tell you when you have two keys and you have to fight like Neo to get to the Room with all the TVs and then some old guy tells you. Or maybe it’s like Kung Fu Panda – There is no Secret Ingredient to the Secret Ingredient Noodle Soup.
You’re it Kid. You’re just gonna have to do your best and make the best of it like everyone else.
Argh… What a pain. Not what I wanted to know. And I don’t think I can do that today. I need a push. So… motivation… What’s the first quote that pops in my head… Oh crap
“We are what we repeatedly do. Quality, then, is not an act, but a habit.”
Aristotle
Of all the answers for your brain to give you first thing in the morning (it’s not early morning at all and I think I’m gonna be late to work today if I don’t finish this soon)
Where was I? – the quote. Right. It makes sense. My brain gave me that answer when I asked so I’m gonna use it.
And it’s a good quote. Excellence does take work. I know that. If you want to get better at something you have to keep working on it over and over and over. And just because I don’t know what I’m doing in my new job because I can’t see the whole picture yet means that I haven’t worked on it long enough to get it so quality is not gonna happen magically out of the blue. I need to work on it a bit by bit till I get better.
Keep turning up at the office every day. Pick up the phone and talk to the clients and solve their issues one by one and when I don’t know what I’m doing i will go and find out one step at a time and figure out about all the processes that go into my job and provide the clients the service they need because I may not see the whole picture but I can do definitely put in my best effort to make sure that the small part that I do play in this company is done properly. That’s it.
Work towards good quality and excellence.
I will go to work today and put in my best effort at my duties. It sucks that I haven’t so far, but I can start now. I will deliver good quality service and I will slowly learn about the rest of it as it happens. I know life will throw unexpected things my way and that is just a test of the quality. A test of the quality of person I am, the quality of work I do and how I handle myself in different situations.
So work on it to deliver good quality work because I want to know and feel that I did a good job that I delivered quality work and I handled a situation beautifully and it’s going to take practice and effort and lots of mistakes along the way with corrections and also failures. Big failures, small failures… quitting halfway through then picking it back up late. Extremely late that now you have to face the consequences of all the mistakes you’ve made.
Work at it. Everyday.
It will get better. With each step you take towards excellence, you improve. And that’s the motivation for the day.
Like Aristotle said, (some old dead guy, who I have not researched enough to know what his life was like)
“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.”
So let’s improve our quality each day with as big a step as we can take till excellence in our work becomes a habit for us. That’s how we make an impact.
