Hi, this is my post for the August’s Writing Prompt by BlogHer.com. Since I haven’t exactly been overflowing with ideas for writing new posts, I’ve decided to try this method meanwhile so that I can keep writing and improve my skills along the way.
Today’s prompt is “What is your favorite fairy tale and why?”. So here goes.
Mirror mirror on the wall
Which is my favorite of them all?…
Fairytales have always been a personal favorite of mine mainly because of the happily ever afters, the adventures and of course the triumph of good over evil. There are so many of fairy tales that picking one as a favorite is difficult, It’s even worse now than when I was a child because there are so many rewritten versions of fairy tales along with the newer ones(and also because back then the internet didn’t deliver books to a handheld device).
But with the aim of keeping this post short, I’m gonna stick with the Disney versions of fairy tales. Of those, my personal favorites (as I wouldn’t be able to pick a single fairy tale no matter what) are Mulan and Beauty and the Beast.
Mulan: The story of a girl who joins the army under false pretenses and ends up saving her country. Is there anything more that needs to be said. It’s just amazing!
Beauty and the Beast: True love conquers all or in this case sets a cursed prince free… So I’m sure you don’t need a plotline for this story anymore….
These reasons also explain why everyone likes fairy tales or maybe they are true only for me. Fairy tales, in general, are an escape from reality and it temporarily creates a place where you believe anything is possible, you could have fairy godmothers or you could befriend a dragon or you could be saved by a knight in shining armor or you could just pretend to be someone else, join the army and save the day yourself. As for me, that is what makes them so special. In those moments when I read the tale and live that story in your mind, I believe in the impossible.

Hi Bernice – The best part of fairy tales is that they’re always a reflection of what’s going on the real world. I can still read them all and see layers of meaning.
